During an 18-day retreat in January I made daily trips to the ocean. My ritual was to take written notes of the color of the sky in relation to the water, without painting the colors. I wanted to interpret the colors later from this written diary.  As the days passed, I became familiar with the tides, rock formations, and regular visitors to the beach.  After a while, I noticed that I had started to look for things that I expected to find there and that the color relationships in the giant, ever changing backdrop of sea and air were not immediately apparent. However, implicit in these color relationships is the reminder that life is never static. There is a subtle evolution always in play; it is what pushes life forward. Comforted by things that we know and validated by how our time is scheduled and filled, this concept can easily be overlooked. "Life's what happens to you when you're busy making other plans," John Lennon succinctly wrote.

There is a constant horizon line that runs through the entire series representing linear progression and separating two elements of air and water. Sometimes this line is blurred, and interconnectedness is apparent, pointing out that opposites always co-exist. The choice of textural plaster to represent elements that are fluid and ephemeral further emphasizes this point.

I started this series before the COVID pandemic took hold, and it took on another slant. Ironically, while mandated to stay home and slow down, time seems to rush by; days blending into each other with little to punctuate the months. Yet many irrevocable changes happened in the broader world, politically and socially, that will affect our lives even with a return to normalcy. Changes have been happening all along.

This show is about the relentless procession of time.
